Mel Stone, long time supporter of show jumping and CVSJA, passed away August 29, 2022 at 8:00 pm after a short battle with cancer. He was 88 years old. Anyone who has been in the show ring in the mid-Atlantic region knows the voice of Mel Stone. He was a judge and announcer for CVSJA, HITS, Swan Lake and many other horse shows always making sure we followed the rules. But he also was always encouraging us and hoping we did our best.
What many do not know about Mel is he was a rider. He won the President’s Cup at The Washington International Horse in 1963 with his horse Top Gallant and was a long-standing member of The Canadian Equestrian Team. He was a grill master, a wonderful chef, a handyman, a tailor, a bus driver, and a handsome man. Mel is survived by his best friend and longtime companion Gail Thompson, his three children Claire, Jordy, and Carrey Stone and countless other people who he mentored through life. Mel will be truly missed by us all.
In lieu of flowers the family asked for donations to be made to the Rebecca Liscombe Memorial Scholarship.
So sad to here of the passing of Mel. I rode with him for a short time in Va and learned so much from him. I shall never forget him.
